On Tuesday, Walter J. Uranowski, lovingly known as "Wuzzy", of Nanticoke retired to his final resting place in Heaven. Surrounded by his three daughters, his journey was swift and peaceful, thanks in part to Allied Services Hospice Center.

He was a proud resident of Nanticoke since the day he was born to Andrew and Catherine (Bonerek) Uranowski on April 2, 1928. He attended Nanticoke schools up through high school until he joined the Army. Walter proudly served his country during World War II with the Army's Company B, 72nd Signal Service Battalion. He received the World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal Japan and attained the rank of Tech 5 (soldier with special technical skills) upon his honorable discharge in 1946.

Walter was a member of St. Faustina Kowalska Parish (formerly Holy Trinity Church) Nanticoke, as well as American Legion Post #350, Nanticoke.

Walter spent most of his civilian career as a Corrections Officer at the State Correctional Institute in Dallas. Although he had a fulfilling career, he was blessed to have been retired for 33 years! He took full advantage of every one of those retirement years by harvesting from his award-worthy gardens, fishing with his brother Leo and friend, Micky, at Lake Wallenpaupack, hunting, and just being in the great outdoors. However, the highlight of his retirement took him on a trek down Route 11 to his daughter's home in Hunlock Creek. Here, he truly lived a new life enjoying his garden, the pool, his buddy Maxx, the parties, and just "taking care of things" with his best friend and son in law, Marty. However, his greatest joy came from being "Pop" to his five grandchildren, Kelsie, Jesse, Brenna, Adam, and Aubrey.

Walter will forever be remembered by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him as the friendly guy with a quick wit and a boyish smile. His family remember him as a loving and giving Dad and Pop.

He will be sadly missed by his girls, Joy (Uranowski) Bader and her fiancé Jack Zardecki, Jr., of Benton; Gail (Uranowski) and her husband, Jerry Jackapino, as well as his granddaughters, Kelsie, Brenna and Aubrey, of Holmdel, NJ; and Lynn (Uranowski) and her husband, Marty Tarnowski, as well as his grandsons, Jesse and Adam of Hunlock Creek.

Services will be held at St. Faustina's Parish in Nanticoke on Friday morning. Friends and family may call and offer their condolences between 9:30 and 10:30 am. in the church chapel, after which, a Mass of Christian Burial will commence. Interment with military honors will take place immediately following Mass at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Sheatown.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Veterans Promise or Allied Services Hospice Center, in Walter's name.
