Maureen F. Obes, 83, of Nanticoke, passed away Sunday morning, January 18, 2026, at her home following a short but courageous battle with cancer. True to her lifelong character, Maureen faced her illness with remarkable tenacity and strength, never giving up and remaining resilient until the very end.
Born on October 5th, 1942, Maureen was the daughter of the late Leonard and Margaret Gilroy Jones. She was united in marriage to James J. Obes Jr., and together they shared 47 years until his passing on November 5th, 2009. A devoted wife, she shared his passion for hunting, fishing, and spending time together outdoors. She thoroughly enjoyed picking mushrooms, berries, and vegetables, often canning, making jelly, cooking, and baking pies. Above all, she was deeply dedicated to her family, helping to build a loving home and raise a wonderful family alongside her husband.
Maureen dedicated many years of her career to Fashion Bug, where she built a remarkable legacy in retail leadership. She began her journey at the Hanover Mall and, through her talent, determination, and strong work ethic, advanced to manage the Wyoming Valley Mall location. There, she proudly oversaw the largest Fashion Bug store on the East Coast. Maureen was deeply respected for her leadership style and was especially passionate about mentoring young women, guiding many throughout the years with encouragement, confidence, and life‑long lessons that extended well beyond the workplace.
Maureen was a faithful member of St. Faustina Kowalska Parish and the Quality Hill Playground Association, where she remained very active throughout the years. She deeply enjoyed giving back to her community through volunteer work at the park, generously donating her time and talents. Maureen especially loved cooking and helping with community events, including the annual Easter Egg Hunt and the Halloween Parade. She was also an avid reader and could be seen sitting on her front porch with a book in her hand.
In addition to her parents, Maureen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jim; her son, Ronald Obes; her grandson, Shane Obes; her sister, Claire Shadie; and her sister and brother‑in‑law, Margaret and Robert Powell.
