John J. Purvin Jr., 65, of the Newport Center section of Newport Township, passed away unexpectedly Friday, February 20, 2026, and was pronounced deceased at the emergency room at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre.
Born November 29, 1960, he was a son of Loretta Davis Purvin of Newport Center and the late John J. Purvin Sr.
Following graduation from John S. Fine High School, Nanticoke, he began a long career as a mechanic alongside his father in the family business, Apex Used Auto Parts, West Nanticoke. John dedicated his life to his work and built his reputation through years of hands-on experience and mechanical skill. He also worked many years for other companies as a diesel mechanic, earning respect for his knowledge, problem-solving ability, and strong work ethic.
John had a stubborn streak and a sharp sense of sarcasm, but he was always quick with a joke. He had a lifelong love of cars and an even greater passion for motorcycles. Whether under the hood or talking engines, he was most at home around machinery and the rumble of a well-tuned motor.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his grandparents and other beloved family members.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, Loretta, are his children, Jessica Purvin, Nanticoke; and John J. Purvin III, Sellersville; a grandson, Evan; a brother, Michael Purvin, Lancaster; and a sister, Debra Purvin (Mark Thomas), Drums.
Viewing and visitation hours will be Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Dinelli Family Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad Street, Nanticoke.
A private graveside service and committal rite will be held in Nanticoke Cemetery.
