John J. Murphy Jr., 68, of Nanticoke, passed away Thursday morning, June 4, 2026 at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born July 20, 1957, he was a son of the late John Sr. and Charlotte O’Borski Murphy. He resided most of his life in West Nanticoke. He graduated from John S. Fine High School, Nanticoke, class of 1975.
Following graduation, John enlisted with the U.S. Navy in November, 1975 and served aboard the aircraft carrier USS America. He was honorably discharged in November 1979.
He was employed at State Correctional Institute, Dallas, retiring as Sergeant. He also operated The Feed Mill hot dog stand in West Nanticoke, worked in Security for Kings College, and owned and operated Murphy’s Grove, West Nanticoke for many years.
John was a well respected member and trustee of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie # 834, Nanticoke; a member of the Quoit Club and the West Side Playground Association, both in Nanticoke. He was a big fan of Penn State, the Phillies, and the Eagles. He will also be remembered for the parties he enjoyed having in his back yard.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Karen Krieger and brother-in-law, Mark; and a brother, Joseph Murphy.
Surviving is his companion of 18 years, Lucy Misiewicz; a sister, Gail Murphy of Nanticoke; brothers, Andrew Murphy of Florida, and Brian Murphy and his wife, Lori of West Nanticoke; and his nieces and nephews, Eric and his wife Jen, Megan, and Josh Murphy, and Amber and Amy Krieger.
A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, June 11th at 5:30 p.m. from Dinelli Family Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad Street, Nanticoke. with the Rev. Jane O’Borski, his cousin, officiating. Military honors will be offered by the U.S. Navy.
Friends and family are invited for visitation hours Thursday from 4 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Private interment will be at the convenience of the family.
