Obituary

Henry A. Turchanik Jr., 81, of the Upper Askam section of Hanover Township passed away Monday evening, November 25th at Birchwood Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Nanticoke following a long courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease.


Born March 24, 1943, he was the son of the late Henry A. and Ann Griffiths Turchanik Sr. A resident of Hanover Township most of his life, he was a graduate of Hanover Memorial High School, class of 1960, and went on to earning a Bachelor's degree in electronics from the University of Scranton in 1964. Henry was co- owner with his parents, as well as Vice President, of Shawnee TV and Appliance / Valley Video Cable, Plymouth and were pioneers in the cable industry in the valley. He and his father also were the developers of Grandview Acres in Upper Askam. In order to assist with the family business, Henry proudly served his country as Coast Guard reservist.


An active and respected member of the community, Henry was a member of several parishes over the years including St. Casimir's, St. Joseph's, the former Corpus Christi parish, Glen Lyon, where he served as president of the Pastor Parish council, and was currently a member of St. Faustina Parish. He loved to sing and was active in the choirs of the churches. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Past Grand Knight of Sacred Heart Council # 10676, Glen Lyon, and a 4th degree Knight with William J. Hafey Assembly # 925. He was on his high school reunion committee; was a coach for ASNWR Little League, assistant cub scout master, Sugar Notch, and served as president of the Hanover Area Quarterback Club. He enjoyed the Phillies, Eagles, playing golf, travel, music, and his pet dogs. Most of all, Henry will be remembered as a man of integrity, kindness, and honor.


He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former, Mary Urban in 1982.


He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Margaret Wierbowski Turchanik; a daughter, Tanya Turchanik, Nanticoke; sons, Henry A. Turchanik III and wife, Tanja, Schnecksville, and Paul Pikutis and wife, Rachel, Abington, Mass; a granddaughter, Elianna Turchanik, Schnecksville; and nieces, nephews and cousins.


His family extend their sincere thanks to Dr. Kuchemba and the entire staff at Birchwood for their care and love shown to Hank these past 2 ½ years. Also, thanks to Sacred Heart Hospice for the comfort and solace they provided in Henry's final days, as well as extended family and friends who have been there for us.


In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Henry's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, the Nanticoke Area Food Pantry, or Blue Chip Farm Animal Rescue.


Funeral services will begin Monday at 10:30 from Dinelli Family Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad Street, Nanticoke with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Faustina Kowalska Parish, 520 S. Hanover Street, Nanticoke.


Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.


Viewing and visitation hours will be Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
