Francis “Skull” Gavis, beloved resident of Birchwood Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Nanticoke, passed away on December 9, 2025, at the age of 75.
Francis was known for his big personality, his creativity, and the joy he brought to everyone around him. An artist at heart, he loved music and drawing, often creating pictures for both residents, residents family and staff at Birchwood. Mealtimes with Francis were filled with stories from his younger years
memories he shared proudly and with a spark in his eye. He often spoke about his younger years and how he built bombs for Vietnam as well as his later work building baby strollers.
One of his greatest passions was music. He was especially fond of the band Quiet Riot and cherished the memory of meeting them in downtown Wilkes-Barre. His love of skull-themed art and accessories became both a hobby and a trademark earning him the nickname “Skull,” which he carried with pride.
Francis was well known throughout the Wilkes-Barre area. Many locals remember seeing him walking through downtown, always ready for conversation and eager to stop in and visit with friends from community favorites like Abe’s Hot Dogs and the Tint Shop. He had a way of connecting with people wherever he went.
At Birchwood, Francis was more than a resident he was family. He brightened the halls with his humor, his stories, and his artwork. He cared deeply for the residents and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was deeply loved by the staff and by his adopted family: Ken, Jocelyn, Kristen, and Melissa. Their bond with Francis was built on care, companionship, and countless shared moments.
Francis Gavis will be terribly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. His presence brought joy, laughter, and warmth to Birchwood and to the community he called home.
May he rest in peace.
