Elsie M. Atkins, 80, of Nanticoke, passed away at her home Wednesday, December 20, 2023 surrounded by her loved ones.
Born January 10, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Elsie Carter Clayworth.
Elsie resided in Nanticoke for most of her life and was a graduate of Nanticoke High School. She was employed at the former Retreat State Hospital until its closing, then Clark Summit State Hospital, until retiring.
Elsie was a member of the former First United Methodist Church, Nanticoke, and also attended First Primitive Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Atkins in 2002; step-son, Joseph Atkins Jr.; brothers: Ernest, Fred, and Theron Clayworth; brother-in-law, Clem Atkins; and a niece, Marylee Savignano.
Known as "Grandma Elsie" to everyone, she will be missed by her step-children: Theresa Cosgrove, (Allan); Christine Alvarez; and Edward Atkins; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Edith Clayworth and niece, Edith L. Clayworth, whom were her caregivers; sister-in-law, Heneritta Atkins; nephews: Theron Clayworth Jr., (Ruth); Timothy Clayworth, (Alicia); and Fred Clayworth Jr. (Christine); multiple great-nieces and nephews; and cousins, including Debra Balla, (Arthur).
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday from Dinelli Family Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad Street, Nanticoke with the Rev. Roger C. Noss Jr., pastor of Mount Moriah Independent Community Fellowship, officiating.
Interment will follow in Chapel Lawn Memorial Park, Dallas.
Viewing and visitation hours will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
