Debra L. Balla, 75, of Nanticoke passed away Sunday afternoon, May 31, 2026 at Birchwood Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Nanticoke, where she was a patient for the past month.
A lifelong resident of Nanticoke, she was born May 13, 1951, a daughter of the late John and Ruth Carter Evans. Debra graduated from Nanticoke High School, class of 1969, was active with the reunion committee and was a past treasurer. She graduated from Luzerne County Community College.
She was previously employed at several automobile dealerships in the business offices and ultimately as controller. She owned and operated Deb’s Tax Service for many years.
Debra was a member of the former St. John’s Slovak Lutheran Church, Nanticoke, where she served as financial secretary, organist and pianist; was attending Mount Moriah Independent Community Fellowship; was a volunteer at Nebo Baptist Church and taught Vacation Bible School; was a Past President of Nanticoke Junior Women’s Club; and a member of the Mozart Club of Wilkes-Barre. Early in life Debra was very active in Girl Scouts of America.
She enjoyed crocheting and created many beautiful afghans. Debra and her husband Arthur also enjoyed many adventures traveling to numerous locations.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by youngest daughter, Brenda Balla.
Surviving is her husband, Arthur Balla, with whom she celebrated their 37th anniversary December 31st; daughters, Deborah Van Balen (Paul) and Robin Mahon (James); grandchildren, Alexander and Ashley; sisters, Jan Ingraham (Eugene) and Dawn Faldowski (Michael); an aunt, Mary Jane Uhing (Richard); sisters-in-law, Grace Lane, and Norma Balla; nieces, Jane (David) and Jill (Nina); nephews, Michael and Joshua (Katie); great nephews, Logan and Benjamin; as well as other aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 6th at 11 a.m. at First Independent Church of Nanticoke, 267 E. Main Street, Nanticoke, with the Rev. Roger C. Noss Jr., officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of service.
